Kathmandu, August 27: Kamal Thapa, chairman of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal, also the former deputy prime minister and foreign minister, has written a book focused on Nepal’s foreign policy and her relations with two immediate neighbors citing India imposed economic blockade and Nepal’s geopolitics.
The book, “Nakabandi Ra Bhurajniti” (Blockade and Geopolitics) was jointly unveiled by Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, author Thapa and journalist Yubraj Ghimire amidst a function in Kathmandu on Monday, August 26.
After unveiling the book, Oli recalled that when he became the prime minister of a coalition government after the promulgation of the new constitution in 2015, he decided to assign Kamal Thapa to the post of foreign minister as the nation was passing through a difficult situation and also experiencing an economic blockade by India. He chose Thapa as an experienced hand in foreign policy.
He had to choose Thapa as his foreign minister to tackle the situation successfully, Oli recalled.
Oli described that relations with neighbors cannot be problem-free but we have to resolve them amicably.
“I believe, problems can be resolved through talks and understandings", Oli said.
“Nepal should give priority to relations with the two immediate neighbors, India and China,” Oli said.
Talking about the joint report of the Eminent Persons’ Group (EPG), Oli said, there could be some misunderstandings so that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not received the report, however, it would be good if he received that.
“They are our neighbors and friends, therefore, we should not worry about them,” Oli remarked.
Oli also said that our problems with neighbors have to be kept on track, not to give up them.”
Finally, Oli remarked that there is no war-like situation between our two neighbors and also there is no situation of foreign attack on Nepal. Therefore, PM Oli said that we should pay attention to domestic peace and economic prosperity of the nation.
Kamal Thapa, the author of the book, remarked that he had joined the government led by Oli in 2015 as he found the situation very critical and national sovereignty and independence were under threat.
Thapa said that during his third tenure as the foreign minister, he had the opportunity to make many important decisions including trade and transportation agreements with China.
During that time, an understanding was reached with China on petroleum products, railways, and transit, Thapa recalled.
“Those understandings and agreements should be materialize based on Nepal’s geopolitical interests”, Thapa said.
“I am inspired by the visions developed by King Mahendra and King Birendra", he said, "The two kings’ visions on foreign policy and the nation’s development are still significant,” Thapa said.
Noted journalist Yubraj Ghimire had reviewed the book. Ghimire said that the book has focused on Nepal’s foreign policy, which is a compilation of the experiences of Thapa, the author when he served as the foreign minister.
Ghimire said that Nepal should maintain balanced relations with both its neighbors, India and China.
