Kathmandu, 11 August: The entire tea industry of Nepal has become panicked as the Indian side has prepared to impose a quantitative ban on Nepali tea contrary to the trade agreement between Nepal and India. A proposal to initially impose a quantitative ban on Nepali tea imports and gradually impose a complete ban has now reached both houses of the Indian Parliament. If the proposal passed in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, Nepali tea is sure to lose its main international market. Point 171 of the report prepared by the 'Department Related Standing Committee on Commerce' under the Rajya Sabha  mentions the import ban on Nepali tea. The committee pointed out two reasons and said that import of tea should be tightened, according to reports. According to the bilateral trade agreement, it is mentioned that no tax will be levied on the agricultural goods exported from Nepal to India. Not only this, the point that India will not impose quantitative restrictions on agricultural products imported from Nepal is also mentioned. It is the opinion of the 'Department Related Standing Committee on Commerce' under the Rajya Sabha that a 'review' and 'revisit' should be done on this matter. People's News Monitoring Service
