Almost six months after registering the impeachment motion against Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana, the House of Representatives (HoR) has started the discussion on the impeachment motion.
This was nothing but a drama staged by the ruling parties. Now the term of the House will expire in two months, and the committee formed by the House to prepare a report on the impeachment motion is given three months to submit its reports. It means, by the time the report is prepared, there will be no parliament to discuss and finanlise the report and by the time, the new House is formed, Rana will be retired on age ground.
On February 13 this year, 98 lawmakers from the ruling Nepali Congress, Maoist Centre and the CPN (Unified Socialist) registered the motion to impeach Rana at the parliament secretariat and with it, he was suspended from the post.
The delay in discussing the motion has been criticized.
Even when the House forwarded the process to discuss the motion in the Lower House on Sunday, lawmaker Khagaraj Adhikari from the CPN-UML expressed his concern over a delay in proceeding with the impeachment motion.
Mahesh Basnet said it was likely that Rana's term would be over amidst the parliament discussions on the motion as the House term would be ending soon.
Niru Devi Pal was of the view that the impeachment motion against the former Chief Justice was registered haphazardly and the same trend was followed in the case of Rana too.
