By Our Reporter The Dr. Shekhar Koirala faction of the Nepali Congress (NC) has accused NC President and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba of not running the party as per the party statute. The faction which held meetings in Kathmandu on Thursday and Friday heavily accused the party president and said that PM Deuba was acting like the president of the coalition parties, not of the party itself. The group irked by the unilateral move of Deuba is also preparing to hold meetings in all 77 districts soon. The group is angry with Deuba when he constituted a few party departments without consulting the Koirala camp which garnered over 40 per cent of votes in the general convention held in December last year. Party president Deuba is so biased towards the leaders of the Koirala camp that while nominating the leaders close to him who lost the election in the 14th general convention, to the party central committee, he did not nominate Dr. Minendra Rija and Dr. Chandra Bhandari, who lost the election of party general secretary. Likewise, Deuba has not given any responsibility to vice president Dhan Raj Gurung while another vice president Purna Bahadur Khadka has been given one responsibility after another. Moreover, he appointed Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat as party spokesperson despite the fact that he was rejected by the general convention as he lost the election. Dr. Mahat is widely regarded to be one of the most corrupt leaders in NC, and Deuba has rewarded him with the post of party spokesperson, which is also ethically wrong. According to NC party leader and party central member Dr. Govind Pokharel, the meeting discussed issues related to government operation, coalition, the party's future policy, the upcoming election and the government's stance on foreign policy. The faction has pointed out five weaknesses of the party leadership including the running of the government. It said the government failed in maintaining good governance. “We had agreed to remove Revenue Investigation, Asset Laundering, National Investigation Department, among others from the Prime Minister's office. However, it is still under the Prime Minister's Office. That went against our commitment,” Pokharel said. The meeting also concluded that the government failed to deliver on its promise to correct the indicators of the economy well. He added, “From the makers of the budget to other works, good economic governance has been ridiculed at present. There has been widespread policy corruption and it should be stopped as soon as possible. In foreign policy, our party should also formulate a common policy for all from the beginning. However, we could not succeed in that as well. At present, Deuba seems to be the president of the coalition rather than the party.” Koirala faction organised the meeting at a time when Deuba is under pressure to keep the coalition intact and when the left parties are exercising to forge an alliance with the communists in the next elections. As the Koirala camp is popular among the masses, the group could cause damage to the party in the election if Deuba does not correct his working style and run the party as per the party statute. It is believed that vice president Khadka and spokesperson Mahat have their upper hands in isolating the Koirala camp leaders because they feel the threat to their future career if Koirala and party general secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa come forward in the party. Central Member Pokharel said that the meeting also emphasized on strengthening the party in every province and municipality and abiding by the party's constitution.
