Is India eligible to become UNSC member? Indian minority communities demonstrating against the new citizenship amendment bill By Our Reporter India is the candidate to the post of the non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council from the Asia-Pacific Region. Surely, India is going to be elected the UNSC non-permanent member as the countries in the Asia Pacific region have unanimously supported India. Nepal and other small nations in the South Asia have uttered their commitment to vote for India in the upcoming election next week. However, the question lies that how far India is eligible to become the non-permanent member of the UNSC as she is bullying all small nations in the region! There is the military standoff between India and China. India and Pakistan are in a ready position to open war anytime. Both the countries are engaged in surgical war time and again. Nepal’s territory has been encroached by India in different 72 places in 24 districts borders shared with India. The SAARC Summit has been derailed for several years since India announced her non-participation in the Summit scheduled to be held in Pakistan. Of late, India suspended Article 370 of the Indian Constitution ending autonomy enjoyed by Jammu and Kashmir followed by military suppression on the local people violating their human rights. Furthermore, India published new political map by including Nepali territory Kalapani-Limpiyadhura one-sidedly along with Jammu and Kashmir. Accordingly, India has introduced draconian laws on citizenship and other issues as an anti-Muslim as well as anti-minority move following months-long nationwide protest and bloodbath in India. Contrary to all these hegemonies, India, the largest democracy, wants to secure her permanent membership in the UNSC through an amendment in the UN Charter after becoming the non-permanent member of the UNSC for the year 2021/22.
