The factional row in the Nepali Congress has finally ended after party president Sher Bahadur Deuba agreed to revise the calendar of the general convention of the lower committees of the parties and share posts in Nepal Student Union and other party departments.
However, both the sides agreed unanimously to hold the central level convention of the party on February 19-22 next year, the same date fixed by the establishment in a meeting of the party’s central working committee on December 27, 2019.
It was since the meeting that unilaterally decided to hold the 14 general convention of the party and increase the party departments to 47 from existing 28, the factional division had widened in the NC.
Of course, the establishment had taken the crucial decision on holding the general convention by extending the term of Deuba-led committee by a year and to add 19 department in the December 27 meeting which was boycotted by the two factions—one led by Ram Chandra Paudel and another Krishna Sitaula.
However, for about a month, the leaders of all three factions held several rounds of meetings to sort out the differences, and finally succeeded to hammer out a point of agreement. Consequently, Deuba agreed to withdraw all decisions of December 27 meeting except for the date of the central convention of the party.
A meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee held on Monday in the presence of the leaders of all factions unanimously decided to hold its 14th central general convention from February 19-22 in 2021 but decided to amend the convention calendar of the party’s lower committees.
However, the Monday meeting was marred by clashes between the two factions of NSU as the party central office turned into a battle filed for a while.
The meeting also decided to form a 7-member committee to investigate into active membership distribution by withdrawing the party’s earlier decision to suspend the clause of the party statute related to active membership.
The meeting, however, failed to form the departments and Nepal Student Unions’ ad-hoc committee as expected due to protest and clashes of students at the party central office on Monday.
