NC leaders divided over age limits for student leaders

By Our Reporter
Disputes have surfaced in the Nepali Congress over the issue of limiting the age for any student contesting for the post in the Nepal Students Union, the student wing of the party.
When the leaders close to party president Sher Bahadur Deuba put forth a proposal to limit the age for the NSU leaders at 32, the leaders of the rival faction opposed the proposal forcing the establishment of the party to postpone the central committee meeting of the party twice.
When general secretary Dr. Shasank Koirala threatened to boycott the CWC meeting, the party boss was forced to postpone the meeting.
However, on Sunday night, the CWC meeting endorsed the age limiting prompting Ram Chandra Poudel and Krishna Sitaula to write a note of dissent in the minute.
The dispute surfaced in the party over the age limit is likely to make the rival camp of NC stronger. Party president Deuba’s camp that faced a humiliating defeats in the elections of the sister organisations came up with the scheme of limiting the age to avoid similar defeat in NSU.
The age limit endorsed by majority had thrown Kundan Kafle out of the election ring of the NSU. Kafle, a strong critic of Deuba, was likely to become next NSU president, but the party barred him from contesting the NSU elections.
