Government to handover Budhigandaki project to Chinese company

Kathmandu, 24 September: The government has decided to reward the China Gezhouba Group to construct the 1200 MW reservoir hydropower project. The Prime minister’s Office has instructed the Energy Ministry to call the Group for further discussion on the project.

Barshaman Pun, Energy Minister, said that the Cabinet has given authority to the Ministry to hold further discussion with the Chinese company.

The cabinet meeting held on 21 September had given instruction to the Energy Ministry to hold talks and endorse agreement with the China Gezhouba Group regarding construction of the project of national pride. On 4 June, 2017 the then government led by Pushpakamal Dahal had inked an agreement with the same Chinese company for construction of the Budhigandaki Hydropower Project. The next government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba had scrapped the deal with the Chinese company on 3 November, 2017.

After the deal was scrapped, the Company had again approached Prime Minister Oli with the commitment of construction of the project at Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Finance (EPCF) model.

To permanently end load-shedding in the country, Nepal needs to construct reservoir model project as most of the hydropower projects in Nepal are based on run of the river project and during the rainy season, Nepal is producing excessive energy whereas during the dry season, the country is facing acute shortage of energy.
