Dr Govinda KC has been staging fast-unto-death in Jumla for the past few days. Nepali Congress, the main opposition in the parliament, and the civil society have been demanding that the government should save Dr. KC’s life. But Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli has not heard them. Instead, he has become aggressive against the lone crusader who has been fighting to reform the medical education sector since 2011.
Instead of trying to end the hunger strike, Prime Minister Oli has been threatening to take action against Dr KC. Even leaders within the CPN, including Education Minister Giriraj Mani Pokharel has been insisting that KC’s demands should be addressed, but PM Oli seems determined to favour controversial medical entrepreneur like Durga Prasai ignoring honest KC and public sentiment. Obviously, PM Oli wants to take a decision in favour of the businessmen like Prasai and others including Rajendra Pande of his party who has invested in Manamohan hospital.
However, PM Oli is likely to change his posture when the doctors and health workers across the country stand for Dr KC stopping work. As such, PM Oli will have no option but to give up his rigid stance to favour business-minded lawmakers and individuals. With the ill-treatment to Dr KC, popularity of the PM has already eroded significantly. When Dr. KC succeeded to oust powerful Lokman Singh Karki from the CIAA and Gopal Parajuli from the Supreme Court, his strike could be enough to damage PM Oli’s reputation as well. But PM Oli seems to have ignored this.
Prime Minister Oli said on Monday that the main opposition party, Nepali Congress was trying to launch an agitation clutching at straws.
Hinting at the fast-unto-death being staged by Dr. Govinda KC in Jumla, the Prime Minister said that a few people were parading in Kathmandu’s streets by instigating someone to stage a hunger strike in Julma. But the situation seems to be the opposite of this. If PM Oli dillydallies in addressing KC’s case, he is likely to face unprecedented problems soon.
