OTHER VOICES State of the nation

PREM BAHADUR GORKHALI

WRITING RECENTLY in The Kathmandu Post (“Who is the problem?”), veteran and prolific senior journalist Aditya Man Shrestha enters the arena of the blame game and points his fingers squarely at the ambassadors of the USA and India (as he puts it, the two Ms) for our current woes. Above all he takes exception to their interference on the question of ‘ceremonial monarchy’ (this M-word he detests) and applying undue pressure on PM Koirala regarding de-mobilization of the Maoists. He regards the latter fit in every way to join the current government (the acceptable Ms!) as they are now part of the mainstream... more

My last meeting with Ali Mia

Without doubt Ali Mia was the only folksinger and poet in Nepal who had the most fascinating personality all through his life. Every single thread of his life has a different story to tell about. However, the other part of his life is rather fraught with penury, drudgery, and melancholy...... more

Futureof aviationin BUSINESS IN Nepal

BY DORJI TSERING SHERPA

The open sky policy for aviation business implemented 13 years ago needs to be closely analyzed for its progress and development. The government should timely upgrade, amend and implement rules as per the demand of the modern day aviation business. The astounding economic transformation and air transport developments in the neighboring countries should be noted. The need of reliable, safe and regular air transport network system within the country, due to its geographical and inaccessible terrain and limited road, is a fact which needs no further explanation.. ... more

Constitution should rule supreme'

BY OUR REPORTER

The present Nepal government and the parliament seem to have rejected rule of law and the constitutional supremacy, widely accepted all over the world as the two principles for democratic governance. It is glaringly evident that after the reinstatement of the parliament, it has overstepped the spirit and the limit of the constitution of the country. Constitution is the principle law of the land and under the constitution of 2047, any law that contradicts the constitution is subjected to be annulled and invalidated. Therefore, the principle question is how can a declaration nullify the constitution..... more

KOIRALA HEADS PLA

The prime minister has been made the chief of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in an interim constitution. This is a move by the committee that drafted the constitution to give the rebel army legality and legitimacy. PM Girija Prasad Koirala shouldn’t and cannot and shouldn’t accept the position created mainly by constitution draft committee chairman Laxman Prasad Aryal who many have accused for republican leanings after superannuation from the supreme court. Before appointment to head the draft committee, he was active in so-called civic society — a Maoist front..... more
